In Appendix B are given particulars regarding the average earnings per working-class family in York, including the total earnings of lodgers, and the earnings of daughters away from home in domestic service. But as one of the chief uses of a knowledge of the average earnings of working-class families is to enable us to judge what surplus, if any, there is, after the necessaries of life have been provided for, a truer statement of the financial position of the families is obtained if the earnings of lodgers and of domestic servants are omitted, as being seldom available for meeting the ordinary family expenditure.
