LANCIA: 70 YEARS ON 1976 marks the 70th anniversary of the foundation of Lancia as a company. The joint venture of Vin- cenzo Lancia and his partner, Claudio Fogolin, is recorded in the company's inaugural certificate dated 26th November 1906. 70 years history of life and industry, achievement and struggle, growth and development. 70 years during which the name Lancia has been synonymous throughout with the development of the motor car. 70 years in which Lancia's activities won far more than mere entrepreneurial significance, but became legendary for his genius. Lancia established his company at a time when the motor car was rich with potential for its future role in the remarkable evolution of our civilisation, this century. His contribution to the development of the car was fundamental in design, technology and production and his reputation of creative origi- nality and courage was recognised worldwide. The ideals and philosophy which Vincenzo Lancia established live on, supported and conserved by the managements of the company who followed him since his death in 1937. Philosopy and ideals which have survived the eventful years, brimming with scientific and technological advances but also marked by the conflict of social, political and military upheaval. Lancia's ideals and standards live on today, despite the recent decline of the motor car to the commonplace. A testimony to Lancia's history and his contribution to those early years of motoring can be seen in Turin's Vincenzo Lancia Motor Museum with models like the Alfa, the first Lancia introduced in 1907, just 10 months after the company was established. The Theta of 191 3, the first car ever with an integral electrical system. The legendary Lambda of 1922 with chassis integral with the body, independent front suspension and narrow angle V engine, more Lancia «firsts». The luxurios eight-cylinder Dilambda and Astura. and later the famous Aprilia, launched in 1937, the year of Vincenzo Lancia's death. The Aprilia was equipped with independent suspension on all wheels, inboard rear brakes and two-box aerodynamic styling. Later, after the Second World War came the Aurelia leading to the cars of the 60's which continued Lancia's advanced tradition to the present day - the Flavia with front wheel drive and flat-four engine, and the Fulvia, particularly the immortal Fulvia coupe, with its countless sporting successes. This and much more is now just history. But Lancia continues to develop and in celebration of the 70th anniversary of its foundation is introducing the new Gamma, which in style and specification characte- ristically reaffirms the marque's continuing com- mitment to advanced design and innovation. The Gamma — in sedan and coupe versions, both styled by Pininfarina — is being launched at a difficult time for motor industries generally, a time of recession and economic restraint. Yet Lancia is confident that these new cars, alongside the highly regarded models of their Beta range will provide a solid foundation for the continuing success of its production, commercial and export operations into which a vast investment programme has already been committed. The launch of the Gamma and this important an- niversary are happily coincidental, pointing confi- dently to future success. With it a new chapter is added to Lancia's history first started so long ago in 1906. It is a testimony to the industry of all engaged with the company. An effort which has enabled Lancia to take yet another major step forward in automotive development, a step which will lend even more strength to this ageless Turin company. At the end of may the last coupe of the Fulvia series has left the assembly line at our plant in Chivasso. for its production has been discontinued This model, introduced in spring 1965 as a «gran- turismo» version of the Fulvia saloon, gathered enormous success both commercial and in rally and speed competitions. At the wheel of this car, Lancia official drivers as well as private drivers won 2600 first overall and class victories both in Italy and abroad; most of them famous the world over such as the 1972 Montecarlo Rally; Tour de Corse; Marathone de la Route; Rally of Great Britain; Moroccan Rally; Rally of Portugal and the San Remo Rally. The Fulvia also won the World Rally Championship. 1972; the European Rally Championship in 1969 and 1973 respectively; the European Touring-Speed Championship in 1966; and six times the Italian Rally championship. Back in 1965 the first Fulvia coupe featured a displacement of 1216 cc; the following year the HF sports version came into the market to enter various competitions driven by Lancia Racing Team drivers and private owners. In 1967 the engine displacement was increased to 1 298 cc for the standard versions and a five-speed gearbox, 1584 cc engine powered the coupe HF models. The tuned up versions achieved 160 CV and a max. speed of 200 kph. From 1969 model year all versions featured a standard fitted five-speed gearbox. As the years went by the car front was duly restyled; in 1973 we introduced the «3rd series» also in the Montecarlo version. The original 80 CV Fulvia coupe had been increased to over 100 CV. The successful mechanical layout of the Lancia Fulvia (4 cylinder narrov V configuration; two overhead camshaft and front wheel drive) achieved outstanding results both commercially and in com- petitions. 161.832 units sold for the coupe only and 192,050 saloons sold up to 1972 date in which production of this model had been disconti- nued and replaced by the Beta version. A total production of 353,882 units for Fulvia alone: the highest figure ever produced by Lancia referred to a single model. However this famous coupe, which is now leaving the motorcar scene, owing to the natural technolo- gical evolution, after eleven years of noteworthy success, will be duly replaced by a well tested 1 300 cc Beta coupe version that should be marketed next autumn. This to enable Lancia compete in the market sector of the medium capacity «granturismo» class.
