ready. A car born to be a comfortable and bright grand-tourer; despite its modest engine capacity, the car is able to meet the requirements of demanding customers. It is rather impossible to say people do not like that new Lancia. Notwithstanding a somewhat sober sty- le, and rather compact outer dimension; it can ac- comodate four people in comfort. Thanks to its front-wheel drive, a long-established Lancia technical tradition, it has plenty of room insi- de, as its luggage capacity: 360 litres equal to and sometimes bigger than a «Berlina» featuring a larger body. The front-wheel drive, we must not forget, en- sures best seating and roadholding features. Front-wheel drive began in 1960 with the Flavia; and since Lancia, pioneered the methods which are now being followed by many other engineers (even those who were once rather cynical about that solution). The 1300 coupé thus has its own peculiar and capti- vating «sporting look». The grille, light structure, air extractors, and windscreen wipers are all black, gi- ving the car its own personality. Inside, the car has the same young sporting look and personality: as exemplified by the smart dashboard, luxury appoint- ment, and bench seat at rear. Inside and out, the 1300 coupe is the ideal «grand- tourer» with high standards of comfort for the driver and passengers, both front and rear. The driver can feel this comfort as he snicks in and out of traffic, when stopping or when parking. All this is favoured by the 1300 Coupe's dimensions: like those of the Fulvia Coupé. The 1300 Coupe is a functional and modern car: in keeping with the true Lancia tradition. According to CUNA standards, fuel consumption is 8.2 litres per 100 km. At a constant speed of 60 k.p.h., the 1300 Coupe fuel consumption is 5.5 litres; at 80 k.p.h. 6.4 litres; at 100 k.p.h. 7.1 litres; at 120 k.p.h. 8.5 litres; at 140 k.p.h. 10.3 litres; at 160 k.p.h. just under 13 litres. Performance - the speeds attained in the various gears are: 1st 45 k.p.h.; 2nd 70 k.p.h.; 3rd 103 k.p.h.; 4th 137 k.p.h.; 5lh over 165 k.p.h. The Coupe, like all Lancias, has a 5-speed gearbox. This is important for the engine life and fuel con- sumption is lower. With two people aboard the 1300 coupé achieves 0 to 400 metres in 18 seconds; 0 to 1000 metres in 34 seconds; and it takes only 13 se- conds to reach 100 k.p.h. from standing start. The gradient capability in 1st gear with four occupants and 40 kg luggage is 44% and is 24% with 4 people and 40 kg luggage towing 840 kg. These are defini- tely outstanding features. The Coupé is an excellent car both for precautionary and protecting safeties: roadholding, braking; lively engine for a fast overtaking; easy gear shift. Thus, as it will be immediately appreciated, we have sports and comfort features combined in one car. With the 1300, Lancia still confirms its engineering skills. Since 1972 Lancia's aim has been to improve the factory's image on the market. Car output, since 1972, proves that Lancia has been very active, in manufacturing various models capable to meet any specific requirement: Saloon, Coupe, Spider, GT models, and even more sports versions. The 1300 Coupé now completes the Lancia range, with its performance, engine capacity and peculiarity for any taste. Engine. THE LANCIA GAMMA WINS THE «SAFETY PRIZE» The «Safety Prize», which the French car Press As- sociation awards every year to the production car which shows the best precautionary and protecting safety qualities, has been given to the Lancia Gamma «Berlina» for the year 1976. This important acknowledgement is the result of strict selection through a detailed questionnaire, which has been sent to every member under the management of the Association committee, who makes a preliminary estimate; in a second stage the car which scores highest, when all such estimates have been taken into consideration, is then submit- ted to all members of the technical section of the same Association who make the definitive classifi- cation. The Lancia Gamma came up with 64 marks, in front of the BMW 528, the Renault 14, the Mercedes 250 and other models introduced in 1976. It is particularly flattering that the «Safety Prize», which was set up in 1969, is for the first time awarded to an Italian car. The acknowledgement the French press granted to the Lancia Gamma — which has even more impor- tance, as the car will be put on the market in France within a few weeks — denotes one of the qualifying characteristics of the Gamma on which Lancia engi- neers have particularly worked on precautionary and protecting safety qualities. In particular, while designing the Gamma, the at- tempt to minimize the possible causes of accident (precautionary or protecting safety) which can be either mechanical or caused by human factors (ti- redness, strain, carelessness, etc.), has been given the utmost priority. Therefore the car incorporates the following items: Superduplex brake system, with vacuum servo unit; disch brakes all round; brake balance limiter to the rear wheels; brake pad indica- tor; brake fluid low level warning light (also warning light for pressure drop with system check); radial tyres with wear indicator; power assisted steering; heated rear window. Moreover particular attention has been paid to er- gonometric studies regarding the position and ac- cessibility of controls, seat adjustment (also for height) steering wheel location adjustment, and also visibility; low noise inside the car, and adjustable heating ventilation system. The precautionary safety features of the Lancia Gamma are more evident on road performance: its acceleration, steadiness, steering accuracy, front wheel drive, its two-box construction(unaffeCted by cross winds), the automatic aiming adjustment of the headlamps, are some of the many attributes which provide easy control of the car. Concerning protecting safety, the basic criteria re- sulted in adeguate space to guarantee survival, and to reduce as far as possible the consequences of possible collision impact of the occupants against the car interior. This has been mainly achieved through: a) controlled crushability bodywork, with energy ab- sorbing front and rear ends; b) rear positioned steering box, protected from head-on collisions; c)energy-absorbing steering column fitted with two joints; d)three way lock to prevent accidental opening of doors in case of accident, but at the same time allo- wing operation when door distorted; e) fully padded interior and lack of all dangerous protrusions. Lastly: seat belt anchorages; laminated glass wind- screen; longitudinal reinforcement on doors, head rest fitted front and rear seats; protected fuel tank duly separated from bodywork by a sheet metal shield. Commenting on the award of the prize to the car, the French daily sports newspaper «Equipe» quotes: «In essence, the Lancia Gamma proved to be a high performance car, with excellent protecting safety, while great effort has been devoted to provide pre- cautionary safety features. Among the cars of cur- rent production, the Lancia Gamma is probably the best motorcar to combine these two safety features. Oktober 1930.
