suis certain d'interpréter le sentiment pro-
fond de toute la Nation ».
Une vie entièrement
consacrée au progrès
Le Président du Sénat, Cesare Merzagora
après avoir rendu hommage à Vittorio
Valletta, professeur universitaire, infatiga-
ble chef d'entreprise ajoute dans son télé-
gramme de condoléances: « Il est entré
au Sénat, nommé par le Chef de l'Etat
pour ses hauts mérites dans le domaine
social. Le Sén. Valletta a apporté à no-
tre Assemblée le haut témoignage d'une
vie tout entière consacrée au progrès con-
tinu d'initiatives industrielles dans l'in-
térêt de notre Pays. En évoquant l'illustre
collègue disparu et en rappelant ses quali-
tés de génie et de coeur, j'adresse les très
vives condoléances du Sénat de la Répu-
blique auxquelles je joins mes sentiments
personnels de regret ému ».
Le Président du Conseil Aldo Moro a
rappelé les « grands services rendus à la
Nation pendant la longue et féconde activi-
té à la direction de l'une des plus grandes
industries européennes et son oeuvre te-
nace pour l'affirmation des valeurs du tra-
vail italien dans le monde ».
Le Président de la Chambre, tous les Mi-
nistres, les Autorités les Personnalités du
monde industriel économique financier ita-
lien et étranger, citadins, travailleurs, ont
envoyé leurs condoléances.
La participation au deuil en Urss
Ce Président du Conseil des Ministres de
lTJrss A.N. Kossiguine a fait déposer une
couronne sur la tombe du Prof. Valletta:
l'ambassadeur d'Urss a Rome. Nikita
Ryjov est venu expressément de Rome. Les
dirigeants soviétiques du Comité pour la
Science et la Technique ont adressé le télé-
gramme suivant: « Nous nous souviendrons
toujours des efforts accomplis par le Pré-
sident pour établir des liens d'amitié entre
la Fiat et les organisations techniques so-
viétiques ».
De nombreuses personnalités soviétiques
ont également télégraphié ou attesté leur
participation au deuil qui a frappé la Fiat.
Des milliers de personnes ont défilé de-
vant la dépouille mortelle du Prof. Valletta
dans la chapelle ardente dressée dans son
habitation de Turin.
Condolences from

The Fiat company and the Valletta family
received condolences from everywhere in
the world. Thousands of touching testi-
monials on the life and contributions of
an exceptional man, a great achiever who
stayed exemplarily simple.
Through his Secretary of State, the Holy
Father sent Mrs Valletta high words of
sympathy: " The sad news grieves the
August Pontiff in the moving remembrance
of his high civil merits and the practice
of Christian virtues "
First worker of Fiat
The President of the Republic, Giuseppe
Saragat, wanted to personally pay homage
to the mortal remains of Professor Valletta
and sent to the widow a noble message
of sympathy in the loss that she and her
relatives, the vast Fiat family and all be-
lievers in work and progress had suffered.
Giuseppe Saragat added in his message:
«With Vittorio Valletta dies the highest
representative of a civil middle class that
has been promoting the social advancement
and well-being of the working people, the
social growth and progress of the nation.
From the serious and hard-working milieu
of Turin he found so congenial he drew
inspiration and strength to build Fiat into
the largest industrial enterprise of Italy
and to contribute more than anyone else
to that economic miracle that set our na-
tion among the leading industrial countries
of the world "
"Bowing reverently before the mortal
remains of the first worker of Fiat, I know
I reflect the deep sentiment of the whole
nation "
A whole life dedicated to progress
The President of the Senate, Cesare Mer-
zagora, paid homage to Professor Valletta
extolling him as " University educator, il-
lustrious scholar, tireless industrial lea-
der. " His message added: " He became
a Senator in the 4th Legislature, named
by the President of the Republic in reco-
gnition of his very high merits in the social
field. "
" Senator Valletta brought to our Assem-
bly the high testimonial of a life entirely
dedicated to the continual growth of in-
dustrial initiatives in the interest of the
country. Commemorating the distinguished
colleague who is no more and recalling his
exalted gifts of mind and heart. I express
the very deep sorrow of the Senate of the
Republic and my own deep grief and sym-
pathy. "
The Prime Minister. Hon. Aldo Mo-
re recalled " his noble virtues and the
great services rendered to the country du-
ring a long fruitful activity at the helm of
one of the major European industries and
his steadfast endeavours to enhance the
values of the Italian work in the world "
Sympathies were also expressed by the
President of the Chamber of Deputies
Government authorities and leaders from
all sectors of industry, finance and business
in Italy and abroad, as well as by plain ci-
tizens and workmen
Condolences from the Ussr
The President of the Council of Ministers
of the Ussr, A.N. Kossygin, sent a wreath
through the Soviet Ambassador in Rome,
Nikita Ryjov, who came expressly to Turin
to lay it on the tomb of Professor Valletta.
