Q the economy of speed The noted journalist and scholar Giovanni Cane- strini, examines an aspect of the problem posed by the unfortunate fact that even today not everyone considers the automobile a necessary instrument for his work. Modern Society is based on transport, on rapid travel, and it is absurd to attack, with the usual slogans, the excessive speeds of today's vehicles. Accidents are not the fault of the motor-cars but of the men who have not yet learned to construct roads adequate for the present traffic and speeds; who have not yet learned to reach the necessary equilibrium between economy and technique. Ail the lancia story - 1914/1921 In the third instalment of the Lancia Story, Fer- ruccio Bernabo tells us of the events which charac- terized the years between 1912 und 1921. Like the other automobile manufacturers at the outbreak of the first world war Lancia dedicated its productive energy to the construction of military vehicles. Together with the «Type 1 Z» — in production since 1912 — the «Jota» and « Diota» were born. These had a payload of 2400 kg. and were powered by a 4 cylinder monobloc engine of 4940 c.c. Pinin Farina built various bodies on these vehicles, includ- ing lorries, gun transporters and special trucks, whilst armoured cars (bodies by the Ansaldo Com- pany) were supplied to the Allied Armies. In the meantime the factory, which in 1915 occupied- 30.000 square meters, had more than doubled its area by the end of the conflict, and, at the time of conversion to civil production .Vincenzo Lancia faced great problems. In 1919 a prototype chassis with a 12 cylinder V type engine (design patented the year before) of 7838 c.c. and 150 H.P. was produced. This was a superb automobile but perhaps premature during the difficult years immediately after the war. The « Kappa», derived from the famous prewar «Theta» and followed by the «Dikappa» and «Trikappa», with an 8 cylinder V type engine, was a great success. This was the high class car, which concluded the second cycle of the Lancia technique. GS I N T HIS issue u editorial We conserve a happy memory of the official presen- tation of the Flavia during the 42nd Turin Motor Show, and we are grateful to the journalists from all over the world who gave exceptional coverage to the event, demonstrating the interest which the latest Lancia model has provoked. Now the Flavias are leaving the production line with a fast moving rythm, and each dayt hey arrive at the Sales centres for consignments to the Cu- stomers. In the meantime the Lancia Magazine has reached its first birthday: our undertaking is to continue this periodic conversation with our friends in an atmosphere of cordiality. Hat chivasso they work for tomorrow: scenes at the working zone Tunnel for the preparation of bodies before painting. SB invitation to turin «italia '61» 03 nievo's friuli country at sea in 1861, during the period of his particular literary fervour. He wrote of the Friuli, a picturesque Italian region where he was born, and where the romantic places and the people provided inspiration for many of the writer's novels, and for the « Con- fessions of an Octogenarian », his most noted work. m the second international hi.fl. meeting why the flavia is so silent We interviewed Mr. Battista Falchetto, a Lancia technician since the days of the Lambda, born and bred to the school of Vincenzo Lancia: Mr. Falchetto, who has followed the birth and perfection of various models through the years, explains the reasons why the Flavia to whose growth he has contributed his great competence and experience, is exceptio- nally quiet. Given that the silence of an automobile depends on two factors, which regard the mechanical part and the body, the following briefly illustrates the basis of the silence of the Flavia. Mechanics: Superfinish of the frictional sumces with consequent possibility of reduction in play and tollerance (for example between the sleeves and pistons of the Flavia the play when cold is only 6-8 hundredths of a millimetre). Profile of the eccen- trics of the camshaft, of the «approach ramp» type, is worked to a thousandth of a millimetre. Automatic regulation of the timing chain tension. Specially designed air filter with « Retex» filtering element. Gears of the gearbox and differential with corrected profiles and perfect coupling. Connection of mecha nical organs to the body with the interposing of rubber. Particularly efficient exhaust silencer. Body: Torsional rigidity of the body (absence of squeaks). Perfect closing of the doors, exact play in the bonnet and boot lids. Elimination of resonance by means of the application of anti-acoustic material. Accurate filling of all holes between the engine compartment and the inside of the car. Application of feit and bituminous cardboard at necessary points. Isolated monobloc windshield wiper-motor. Anti- whistle trim along the joining edges of doors and windows. This list of the elements which make the Flavia a singularly silent motorcar serves above all as an indication of the care with which Lancia automobiles are designed, constructed and tested. The «Second International Hi.Fi. Meeting» will be held in Turin on the 17th and 18th of next ]une. This meeting has been included in the official calendar of« Italia '61 » the Celebrations of the Unity of Italy. The programme which is being prepared will be sent to all the Lancia Hi.Fi. members, and it will comprise, among other items, a visit to Chivasso where the new Lancia factory is being built. Members of Hi.Fi. are cordially invited to Turin for the 17th and 18th ]une. bolzano and the dolomites On this and following pages, one of the most sugge- stive and spectacular zones of North Italy are presented. The illustrations show a tourist map of the Dolomites, with the panoramic road and a coloured illustration of the zone around Bolzano, where the factory which produces the Lancia industrial vehicles is situated. no the lancia factory at bolzano The Lancia factory at Bolzano was built in 1935 and divided into two principale parts: Industrial vehicle construction and Foundry. There are 2.600 w rkers there. Th present production of vehicles includes the Esitau 503 and Esadelta 401 lorries, in addition to the Esatau 703 bus chassis and military vehicles (lorries with 4 and 6 driving wheels, and chassis for firefighting vehicles for use at airports). The entire construction cycle of these vehicles takes place at the Bolzano factory which therefore possesses mechanical and metallurgical departments. The foundry, which has the most modern, plant Is equipped for the production of cast-iron and alluminium, which, in the form of unfinished parts, supply the entire needs of the car factory in Turin as well as those of the local factory for industrial vehicles. EE) flavia school The Flavia, as any new model, must be known in all its particulars by those who will be responsable for its maintenance. A« Flavia School» has been opened in Turin where the • mechanics of our branches, Concessionnaires and authorized service stations, attend courses during which they are specialized in the new car. Tnis initiative is of great interest since it guarantees ever better assistance to the Customer. m invitation to the egyptian museum in turin Professor Ernesto Scamuzzi illustrates, in this article, the origin and the high cultural value of the collec- tion at the Turin Museum, where the tourist finds one of the richest collections documenting the Egyptian Civilisation. S3 fashion: the romantic line The famous Florentine fashion designer, Emilio Pucci, describes the foundamental characteristics of his Spring-Summer collection, inspired by the « Roman- tic Line». The predominant colours will be pink and red in alUtheir various shades. The illustrations show two of Pucci's creations: Evening dresses respectively in pink silk jersey and red silk faille. In Turin the International Exhibition, in celebration of the first hundred years of Italian Unity, is being completed. The movement for Unification had its fulcrum and dynamic centre in the capital of Piedmont. Great labour, regional, and historical exhibitions are being prepared, together with other attractions including an overhead mono-railway. m news Cesco Tomaselli the journalist remembers the great and famous patriot and poet/writer, Ippolito Nievo, who fought with Garibaldi's troops and who died A special « Ministerial» type of Flaminia, with leng- thened chassis and wheelbase, is being built by Pinin Farina. A small series of the secars is destined for use on official occasions in the service of the Presidency of the Republic, and one will be at the disposal of Queen Elizabeth of England during her visit to Italj next May. The Flaminia coupé Pinin Farina is now available (on request and at extra cost) with an air conditioning system: it is the first Italian car so equipped (the equipment is made by the I.P.R.A. in Turin).
