The formation of the « Hi.Fi. Elizabeth of England, accompanied by Presi- dent Gronchi, is driven through Rome in the special « 335» Flaminia. The Royal Visitor was most inte- rested in the complete and original finish and acces- sories studied by Lancia and by Pininfarina for this car, which is now being used in the service of the « Quirinale». ED THE ACROPOLIS: HALF DREAM, HALF REALITY Alessandro Cutolo, the noted historian and writer speaks brilliantly of the poetic, historic and touristic value of the Athens Acropolis, quoting an unpublished poem by Arrigo Averardo. S3 WHITE ROAD - BLACK ROAD The problem of the roads becomes graver every day: the present Italian Minister of Public Works appreciates the importance of the question, and has given absolute precedence to the state, pro- vincial and municipal roads which are almost always unjustly relegated to second place behind the great autostrade. Another consideration: to build «long lasting» roads, whose greater initial cost is amply com- pensated by the far greater durability. The concrete road, the «white road», is the solution which offers most advantages: durability, day and night safety, almost total lack of maintenance, better « rolling qualities» and consequent greater comfort and safer travelling. Four concrete roads are shown on page 29: in Ger- many, in France and, in Italy the Monza Autodrome. MODERN TENDENCY IN MOTOR-BUS CONSTRUCTION This article is the synthesis of a lecture given at the University of Engineering, Milan, on 20th May 1961, by Prof. Antonio Fessia, Lancia Technical Manager, on « Modern tendencies in motorbus construction with particular reference to safety». THE LANCIA STORY - THE LAMBA The fifth instalment of the Lancia story is dedicated to the revolutionary « Lambda», considered to be Vincenzo Lancia's masterpiece, the first series-pro- duced automobile in the world with integral body construction, narrow V fast-revving engine and inde- pendent fron suspension. The design of the Lambda benefiting from the experience and meditation oi Vincenzo Lancia, was commenced in 1921, and went on for more than a year. The car was presented for the first time at the Paris and Geneva Salons in October 1922, where it was enthusiastically acclamed by the public, but provoked criticism and doubts on the part of some technicians. 13 thousand examples in nine series of the Lambda were built between 1923 and 1930. A few are still circulating today, and are much sought-after by vintage car enthusiasts. A Lambda almost won the 1928 Mille Miglia. The nine series of the Lambda are shown in the photographs on page 11. The patent for the integral body construction, dated gg FLOR '61 The international flower and ornamental shrub exhibition was opened in Turin on 18th of April. This show has transformed the Valentino, a beautiful park on the River Po, into a magic garden, where rare shrubs and carpets of flowers make it a dream for visitors. ES Machinery has its beauty too, not only composed of geometric rythm, but also of authentic plastic and chromatic values, as can be seen in the colour- photo of a section of the Lancia factory reproduced here. 03 G.C. ABBA-VATE - GARIBALDI NO On the occasion of the centenary of Italian Unity we remember the Author of the volume « Da Quarto al Volturno, Noterelle di Uno dei Mille», the best guide for those who wish to retrace the route of the Thousand. G.C. Abba was essentially a poet who demonstrates a constant and moving purity of spirit in all his works. And it is this integrity of heart and senses which gives us the enchanting freshness which fixes for eternity the episodes of the Gari- baldian epic in the «Noterelle». A historic document is reproduced on page 33: Garibaldi's Order of the day to his heroic men after the Battle of Calatafimi; written in the hand of G. C. Abba. Page 37: Significant tests of two Lancia models: Giulio Cabianca in a Lancia Flaminia Zagato covered the distance between Milan and Florence on the Autostrada del Sole in 1 hour 30 minutes at an average speed of 187 K.P.H. Gianni Mazzocchi, Editor of the magazine « Quattroruote», demon- strated, with a Flavia, that a car can beat a train by covering Milan-Florence in 2 hs. 27 minis. 20 sees, at an average of 125.429 K.P.H. Turin, the Archbishop of Agrigento, accompanied by Ing. Pesenti, visits the new factory at Chivasso. EH SPORT In the Mille Miglia 1961 the Lancia Flaminia Sport Zagato, driven by Cabianca and Provolo, brilliantly won the class 1301-1500 cc in the Gran Turismo Category, obtaining in addition the second place overall, following a powerful 3 litre Ferrari. Cabianca also obtained the best overall times in two speed tests during the race: the timed climbs from Fiviz- zano to Cerreto and from Cafaggiolo to Piancro. The car was the only Lancia Flaminia entered in the race. Also in the Mille Miglia the Appia Sport Zagato of Frescobaldi-Sama won the 1001-1150 cc class, and came ninth in the general classification, in front of much larger cars. EE Emilio Pucci's creations, launched under the name of MODERN ROMANTICISM, together with a Silver Flaminia Coupé. BRAKES Today life is motion, and motion is conditioned by the possibility of arresting it. But if reasoning and intelligence are sufficient to contain human intellectual and manual activities within desired limits, a proper mechanism is neces- sary to brake an object in movement, proportionate to the force it has to apply. With the invention of the wheel the problem of braking arose: with the current speeds of motorcars, the chaotic circulation on the roads, racy driving, etc., the disc brake was born, and today is mounted by Lancia on the Flaminia and on the Flavia. EE) RECORD OF FAITHFULNESS Alberto Destefanis, the Italian Economist, remembers an old Lancia Artena in which he drove 240.000 kilometres. m BLU LANCIA The first number of the Lancia House Magazine, « Blu Lancia», destined for all employees of the Company, has been published. It will create a cordial communication between the Company and those who work for it, bringing a friendly voice and amusement to their families. m THE MODERN ART GALLERY - TURIN Dr. Vittorio Viale, Director of the Turin Civic Museum, gives a resumé of the story of the birth and scope of the Gallery, inaugurated by the Pre- sident of the Republic on 31st October 1959. After a description of the building, with a few words on the architectural rationality, and exhibition of the 708 pictures and 56 sculptures which compose the collection, and a list of the more significan works, the writer closes with a phrase which illu- strates the intentions for the future: «Now the Gallery exists. It is however necessary to render it ever richer and more complete, insert it in the international artistic movement, demon- strate its fervid life through exhibitions, enlarge the circle of faithful and active friends, render the Museum a habitual and welcoming goal for the public.
